#HealthInfo: What is Cardiovascular disease (CVD)?

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a general term that describes a disease of the heart or blood vessels. Blood flow to the heart, brain or body can be reduced as the result of a blood clot (thrombosis), or by a build-up of fatty deposits inside an artery that cause the artery to harden and narrow (atherosclerosis).

Types of CVD
There are four main types of CVD. They are:
  • coronary heart disease
  • stroke
  • peripheral arterial disease
  • aortic disease
1. Coronary heart disease
Coronary heart disease (CHD) occurs when the flow of oxygen-rich blood to your heart is blocked or reduced by a build-up of fatty material (atheroma) in the coronary arteries.

The coronary arteries are the two major blood vessels that supply your heart with blood. As they narrow because of a build-up of atheroma, the blood supply to your heart will be restricted. This can cause angina (chest pain). If a coronary artery becomes completely blocked, it can cause a heart attack.

2. Stroke
A stroke is a serious medical condition that occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off.

Like all organs, the brain needs a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients to function properly. This is provided by the blood, so if your blood flow is restricted or stopped, brain cells will begin to die. This can cause brain damage and possibly death.

A stroke is therefore a medical emergency and prompt treatment is essential. The sooner a person who has had a stroke receives treatment, the less damage is likely to occur.

The main symptoms of stroke can be remembered with the word FAST, which stands for:

  • Face –the face may have drooped on one side, the person may be unable to smile, or their mouth or eye may have drooped
  • Arms – the person may be unable to lift their arm and keep it raised because of weakness or numbness
  • Speech – the person's speech may be slurred or garbled, or they may not be able to talk at all
  • Time – it's time to dial 999 immediately if you see any of these signs or symptoms
3. Peripheral arterial disease
Peripheral arterial disease, also known as peripheral vascular disease, occurs when there's a blockage in the arteries to your limbs (usually your legs).

The most common symptom of peripheral arterial disease is pain in your legs when walking. This is usually in one or both of your thighs, hips or calves.

The pain can feel like cramp, a dull pain or a sensation of heaviness in your leg muscles. It usually comes and goes, and gets worse during exercise that uses your legs, such as walking or climbing stairs.

4. Aortic disease
The aorta is the largest blood vessel in the body. It carries blood from your heart to the rest of your body.

The most common type of aortic disease is an aortic aneurysm, where the wall of the aorta becomes weakened and bulges outwards. You'll usually experience pain in your chest, back or abdomen (tummy).

Risk factors for CVD
There are a number of risk factors for CVD, including:
  • high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • smoking
  • high blood cholesterol
  • diabetes
  • lack of exercise
  • being overweight or obese
  • a family history of heart disease
  • ethnic background
The amount of alcohol you drink and how you deal with stress are also thought to be linked to the risk of developing CVD.

Preventing CVD
Most deaths caused by cardiovascular disease are premature and could easily be prevented by making lifestyle changes, such as eating healthily, exercising regularly and stopping smoking.

Addressing one risk factor, such as giving up smoking, will bring important health benefits, but to significantly reduce your risk of developing CVD you need to look at your lifestyle as a whole.
In particular, you need to consider:

  • your diet
  • your weight
  • how much alcohol you drink
  • how much exercise you do
  • whether you need to stop smoking

Children
Evidence shows that eating and drinking habits established during childhood can continue for many years into adulthood.

Bad eating habits during childhood may not pose an immediate health risk, but they could lead to serious health problems in adulthood.

Four important things to consider are the amount of:
  • fat in your child's diet
  • salt in your child's diet
  • sugar in your child's diet
  • exercise your child does

#YouTube: Defence for Children Palestine | Khan Al-Ahmar: School is Out

Defence for Children International Palestine produced a short film about the Khan Al-Ahmar School in the hills east of Jerusalem that operates under threat of demolition by Israeli authorities.

The Jahalin Bedouin community built the Khan Al-Ahmar School in 2009 using mud and tires, due to the fact it is located in the occupied West Bank, specifically Area "C", where Israeli authorities prohibit Palestinians from building with cement. Over 70 students are currently enrolled in the school, which could be destroyed at any time pursuant to a demolition order issued by Israeli authorities. The nearest alternative school is located about 45 minutes away by car.

The school's imminent demolition is part of a wider plan by Israeli authorities to displace the Jahalin Bedouin living in Area "C" of the occupied West Bank. The Khan Al-Ahmar School and Bedouin community is located in the Jerusalem periphery between the illegal Israeli settlements of Ma'ale Adumim and Kfar Adumim. While the Jahalin Bedouin have a longstanding presence in this area, the community and school present an obstacle to Israel's planned settlement expansion and construction of the separation barrier. The community lives with the threat of imminent displacement.

In November 2013, Jewish settlers from neighboring Kfar Adumim settlement filed a petition against the Khan Al-Ahmar School with the Israeli High Court, the third to date. The settlers demand that Israeli authorities enforce the demolition order and destroy the school. The next court hearing is scheduled for April 23, 2014.

#HealthInfo: Menopause

The menopause is not an illness. If you subscribe to the standpoint currently held by the conventional medical profession, you’d be forgiven for thinking it was. Women in many other cultures do not experience the menopause as a crisis demanding medical intervention. Many of them simply do not suffer the physical and emotional symptoms that women in the West are programmed to accept as inevitable. In our society the focus of the menopause is one of loss.
Women are programmed to dwell on loss – the loss of periods, the loss of the ability to create life, the loss of hormones, the problems of the ’empty-nest’ syndrome. In other societies, this time in a woman’s life is seen as one of gain, a time of great wisdom. A time when the emphasis shifts away from doing the chores, working in the fields, to the role of lawmaker and counsellor to younger couples, where maturity and experience make a significant and valuable contribution to the family and society.

What happens at the menopause?
At the menopause women literally run out of eggs. Each woman has a supply of eggs (approximately 2 million) from the moment she is born and over the years they are used up and die off. She finally reaches a certain age when there simply aren’t any more. What the body does then to try to get that woman to ovulate is to release the hormone FSH. This hormone is released every month in a normal cycle but during the menopause, a woman’s body registered that ovulation is not taking place, so even more FSH is pumped out.

The interesting thing is that as the ovaries decline their production of oestrogen, nature has something else up her sleeve. We are also able to produce a form of oestrogen (called oestrone) from our adrenal glands in order to compensate for the decline from the ovaries.

We also produce oestrogen from fat cells, so being ultra-slim will not have health benefits in the long run, particularly if you are going through menopause. Overweight isn't the answer, either, but from an oestrogen-production point of view, you are better off being slightly overweight than slim.

What are the symptoms?
These vary from woman to woman. Some women sail though the menopause without any symptoms and the only thing they notice is that their periods have stopped. Some of the women I have seen in my clinic report being completely drenched in sweat day and night, and getting up to change their night clothes two or three times a night, or even taking a shower in the middle of the night.

Symptoms of the menopause can include hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood swings, declining libido, osteoporosis, ageing skin, lack of energy, joint pains, weight gain, headaches and changes in hair quality. Interestingly, men also experience a lot of these symptoms, with irritability, a declining libido, changes in weight, ageing skin and hair, depression and anxiety. These symptoms are apparently part of the Western ageing process for both men and women, so it’s important not to blame every symptom that you experience on the menopause.

#Newsflash: Mahathir faces defamation investigation

KUALA LUMPUR -- Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad is the subject of a probe by authorities related to anti-government remarks he published on his personal blog.

Khalid Abu Bakar, the chief of police, revealed on Monday that the police are investigating the 90-year-old former statesman, based on reports made against his recent blog post on the government's handling of corruption cases involving Prime Minister Najib Razak.

"The police report was received a day or two ago," Khalid was quoted as saying by state news agency Bernama. He added that the police will press charges if "there is a case for action to be taken."

Since the beginning of last year, Mahathir has been critical of Najib and even called for the prime minister's resignation for his handling of troubled state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad.

He stepped up his attacks after the attorney general's office decided last month to close the inquiry into the nearly $700 million in Najib's personal bank accounts. In one post dated Feb. 3, he questioned Attorney General Mohamed Apandi Ali's will to cooperate with international investigations into funds allegedly linked to Najib, the person who appointed him.

The Swiss attorney general's office said in a statement on Jan. 29 that it is looking into misappropriated funds amounting to $4 billion linked to 1MDB and requested mutual assistance from its Malaysian counterparts.

Mahathir appears to be fully aware the consequences of his tongue-lashing against the government. In his latest blog entry on Monday, citing a threat by a ruling party official, he warned of the possibility that he could be arrested.

He was questioned last November by the police over his anti-government remarks but was not charged. His son, Mukhriz Mahathir, was forced to resign as a state chief minister earlier this month due to his criticism of Najib.

#Health Info: How to Train Your Brain to Fall Asleep in 60 Seconds

Can’t sleep? Try the 4-7-8 breathing technique that claims to help you nod off in 60 SECONDS

Method has been pioneered by Harvard-trained Dr Andrew Weil
It involves regulating your breathing to various counts of 4, 7 and 8
It lets oxygen better fill the lungs, calms the mind and relaxes muscles
For a long time, I had a hard time sleeping. We can chalk it up to bad food late at night, too many screens before bed, and stress. I found it incredibly difficult to shut my brain down and give it a break at night. After weeks of not being able to sleep a full night, a friend of mine told me about the “4-7-8″ breathing trick

But what is that?

This method was developed by a wellness practitioner, Harvard-educated Dr. Andrew Weil, who studies meditation, breathing, and how it can be used to counteract stress. It’s easy to do. You breathe in through your nose for four seconds, hold it for seven seconds, and exhale through your mouth for eight seconds. She explained to me that it slows down your heart rate and it also releases chemicals in our brains that soothe you.

Pretty neat, huh? I was skeptical, but I tried it. It ended up working like a total charm. I was out before I reached my fourth repetition and it tends to knock me out easily in less than a minute.

This is good for more than just falling asleep though. When we’re stressed, our endocrine system releases adrenaline through our adrenal glands. This elevates your heart rate and can make you feel jittery and unwell. Often times, your breathing also becomes rapid and shallow.

By using this breathing method, you counteract the natural effects of adrenaline and your body is forced to slow down your heart rate. It simply doesn’t have a choice! When you begin, you may feel a tad uncomfortable.

But as you continue with it, you really do feel your heart rate slow and your mind clear. It’s almost like you’re spending a leisurely afternoon at a beach. So relaxing. Give it a try tonight and tell us what you think! You can also check out Dr. Weil’s site if you are interested in further reading.

#Al-Islamiah: RUPA-RUPANYA RAMAI YANG SALAH MANDI WAJIB, INI CARA MANDI WAJIB YANG BETUL!!

Assalamualaikum, Berkongsi sedikit ilmu… dari JAKIM.

Mandi wajib yg betul...

Panduan Tambahan:
1. Agar wajah selalu segar, berseri-seri dan cantik, cucilah minima 5 kali sehari dengan air wudhu. Jangan langsung dikeringkan, biarkan menitis dan kering sendiri. Lalu ambillah sajadah, shalat, berdzikir, dan berdo’a.

2. Untuk menghilangkan stress, perbanyaklah ‘olahraga’. Cukup dengan memperbanyakkan solat. Ketika solat, kita mengerakkan seluruh tubuh.

Jangan lupa bisikkan ‘kata kunci’, “Allahuma Kamma Hassanta Khalqii Fahassin Khuluqii” (Ya Allah sebagaimana engkau telah memperindah kejadianku, maka perindah pula akhlaqku). (HR Ahmad).- (DOA TENGOK CERMIN).

Jika kuat, lebih bagus lagi puasa Nabi Daud AS i.e. selang satu hari. Makanlah makanan halal, perbanyak sayuran, buah-buahan, dan air putih.

Wassalam.

“Sampaikanlah pesanku biarpun satu ayat…”

#Newsflash: Rare astronomical event: Singapore to experience partial solar eclipse on Mar 9

SINGAPORE: Get ready for a rare and special astronomical event next month. On Mar 9, a partial solar eclipse will be visible in Singapore, with nearly 90 per cent of the sun being obscured by the moon at the point of maximum eclipse.

According to Science Centre Singapore, next month’s eclipse will begin at around 7.22am, 10 minutes after sunrise. The point of maximum eclipse will be around 8.23am and the eclipse will end at 9.33am.

At the point of maximum eclipse, the sky should be similar to evening brightness, Dr Abel Yang, a Lecturer from the Department of Physics at the National University of Singapore, told TODAY.

However as the sun is being progressively obscured by the moon, there will not be a sudden drop in the sun’s brightness, Dr Yang said. “For someone who is not actively watching out for the eclipse, it would seem as if the morning twilight is longer than usual,” he explained.

The eclipse will be visible from anywhere in Singapore that has a clear view of the eastern horizon, at a compass heading of approximately 94°, said the Science Centre.

As a general tip, make sure there are no trees or buildings in your way, especially since the sun will still be low when the eclipse starts, said Dr Yang.

Between 1700 and 2100, only 146 solar eclipses have been (or will be) visible from Singapore. The last solar eclipse visible from Singapore was on May 10, 2013. But, the eclipse on that day was extremely difficult to view, as it was over shortly after sunrise.

VIEWING THE ECLIPSE SAFELY
Science Centre Singapore warns the public not to look at the sun directly without any form of protection, as it can cause permanent eye injury, including blindness, within a few seconds. The Science Centre added that the effects of eye injury may only be noticed a few hours later, as the retina of the eye has no pain receptors.

Some safe methods of viewing the eclipse include using specially designed solar glasses or through the pinhole projection method. (Click here to view NASA’s how-to-guide on making a pinhole camera at home.)

People who wish to use a telescope or binoculars to view the eclipse, or even take photos or videos, are also advised to use solar filters or glasses for both the device and photographer.

“These filters block out not only most of the visible light, but also ultraviolet and infrared light that can be harmful to your eyes,” Dr Yang explained.

“The filter must be designed for telescope use and must cover the front of the telescope or binoculars,” he added. “Do not use solar filters that cover (only) the eyepiece end as the focused sunlight can heat up the optics and cause it to crack.”

The following are unsafe methods to view the eclipse. (Note: This is not an exhaustive list. When in doubt, stick to solar filters or a pinhole camera):

Sunglasses (polarised and non-polarised versions)
Solar film for car and household windows
Tinted glass
Photographic negatives
X-ray film
CDs/DVDs
Photographic filters
Looking at the reflection in a bowl of water or mirror

Following the Mar 9 solar eclipse, the next solar eclipse visible in Singapore will be on Dec 26, 2019. This solar eclipse will be even more special, as the Sun and Moon will be exactly in line, but the apparent size of the Moon will be smaller than that of the Sun, creating the appearance of a “ring of fire” in the sky.

Dr Yang explained that while solar eclipses can occur on earth rather frequently, the path of a solar eclipse only covers a very small part of the planet; and as such for a given location on earth (such as a town or village), solar eclipses, particularly a total solar eclipse, can be very rare.

On March 9, other parts of South-east Asia and the Pacific will also experience solar eclipses to varying degrees. Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines for instance will see more than 50 per cent of the sun partially covered, while Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam and Thailand will see about 50 per cent partial eclipsed sun. The Indonesian city of Palembang will be one of the few that will witness a total solar eclipse.

UNDERSTANDING SOLAR ECLIPSES
A solar eclipse occurs when the moon casts a shadow on the earth when it comes between the earth and sun. Because the moon is small compared to the sun, its shadow is small so only a small part of the earth will be in shadow.

In the past, total solar eclipses, which can occur once every few hundred years for a given, would often be associated with omens or the supernatural, said Dr Yang.

Dr Yang’s colleague, Dr Cindy Ng, a Senior Lecturer, explained: “The Sun is the source of light and heat. In the past, people could be shocked when a solar eclipse occurred. Without good knowledge of astronomy, they had absolutely no idea what the circular darkness was, and why it was eating the Sun. They were also unsure if the Sun would later regain its brightness, or be forever lost in darkness. It was an anxious moment to our ancestors, coupled with the fear of losing sunlight forever.”

Today though, Dr Yang said solar eclipses give scientists the opportunity to observe stars in the vicinity of the sun that would otherwise be lost in daylight.

“Such observations have been used to show test the theory of relativity, which predicts that a massive object such as the sun can bend light that passes close to it.”

The scientific term for this phenomenon is an “annular eclipse”. Of the 146 solar eclipses that have been (or will be visible) from Singapore between 1700 and 2100, only 3 are annular or total solar eclipses. The last total solar eclipse in Singapore was on March 4, 1821, according to the UK Hydrographic Office, then known as Her Majesty's Nautical Almanac Office (HMNAO).

Perkahwinan, ia bukanlah nasib semata-mata.

1 # Memperbetulkan kembali niat kita

Be positive thinking.

5 # Memperbaiki Diri Sendiri Dahulu

9 # Mengamalkan Doa agar dipercepatkan Jodoh

Doa Mendapatkan Jodoh Khusus Untuk Lelaki
Rabbi hablii milladunka zaujatan thoyyibah akhtubuha wa atazawwaj biha watakuna shoohibatan lii fiddiini waddunyaa wal aakhirah”

Doa Mendapatkan Jodoh Khusus Untuk Wanita
Rabbi habli milladunka zaujan thayyiban wayakuuna shaahiban lii fiddiini waddunyaa wal aakhirah”

Be Positive :)
