TWO men, a Singaporean and a Malaysian, died on the spot when the van they were in mounted a kerb and struck a MRT track pillar along Commonwealth Avenue West on Monday morning.
The accident happened at 10.20am near the Singapore Polytechnic. The two men were working in emergency lift rescue for Esmaco, a subsidiary of United Premas. It is not clear if they were on the way to a case or returning from one.
Mr Ismadi Abdul Wahab, who is is his early 30s and his co-worker, a Malaysian known only as Mr Siva were trapped in the front cabin of the van, which crashed and landed on its right side.
Singapore Civil Defence Force rescuesrs arrived and extricated them, but they were pronounced dead by paramedics.
The news came as to a shock to Mr Ismadi's friends, One of them turned up at his office to look for him on Monday after having lost touch for a few years. But he found that he was too late. 'Maybe it's just not my luck to see him,' said the man, who only wanted to be known as Eddie. He described the married man as a cheerful and happy-go-lucky person who readily lent friends and family members a helping hand.
'Once I needed to borrow $2,000 from him and he just lent it to me without thinking,' he said.

Engineering Technicians, Ismadi Bin Abdul Wahab and Sivanathan A/L Kandiah from the Lift Rescue Team, met with a fatal accident yesterday morning. Ismadi joined UGL Premas last February. He left behind his wife and two young children. Sivanathan joined our company eight months ago. He was survived by his parents and two sisters.
