SINGAPORE: For the first time since Independence, every available seat will be contested in a General Election.
Opposition candidates came forward on Nomination Day to file their papers to contest the 89 seats that will be contested come the Sep 11 polls.
The coming hustings will see a total of 181 candidates stake their claim for a place in Parliament. The People's Action Party has the largest slate of candidates, with 89, followed by the Workers' Party with 28. The National Solidarity Party will field 12 candidates, while the Singapore Democratic Party and Reform Party will each contest 11 seats.
Three single-seat constituencies - MacPherson, Radin Mas and Bukit Batok - will see three-corner fights. Two of these will feature independent candidates.
