The suspect, a Maldivian, was arrested with four others at a condominium in the capital city, according to the Malaysian police.
KUALA LUMPUR: A 47-year-old Maldivian has been arrested for his suspected involvement in a plot to kill the President of Maldives.
In a press release issued on Friday (Oct 30), the Malaysian police said that its counter-terrorism division arrested the man, who was a state investment envoy, on Wednesday at a condominium in Kuala Lumpur along with four others, also Maldivians.
The other four comprised two men and two women aged between 28 and 38 years old. Police added that the suspects were arrested under the Immigration Act and were deported from the country on Friday to assist in the investigations in Maldives.
President Abdulla Yameen had been on a speedboat to the Maldives capital of Male, returning from his Haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, when an explosion occurred. He escaped the incident in September unhurt, but his wife and two aides were injured.
