#Travel: Brazilian Sand Dune Pools Are A Natural Phenomenon

No, it's NOT a mirage! The mesmerizing Brazilian dunes which transform into stunning turquoise lagoons during rainy season

In the midst of the rolling sand dunes of a national park in Brazil, a breathtaking transformation takes place each year.

During the rainy season, the valleys between the golden landscape are filled with crystal-clear turquoise lagoons - and the result is simply breathtaking.

The unspoilt paradise is located in Lençóis Maranhenses National Park, providing explorers with a beautiful backdrop to escape to while enjoying a respite from the heat.

In peak season around July, these tranquil pools can reach ten feet in depth and are surprisingly warm to swim in reaching up to 30 degrees C.

Stretching for miles and miles, the picture-perfect landscape resembles a desert, but can't officially be categorized as one, due to the 47 inches of rain it receives each year.

Almost no vegetation grows in the area, but the aqua phenomenon provides a brief chance for life to arrive in the area.

Interconnecting lagoons combine with neighboring rivers, opening up channels for fish to explore the pools.

The experience is short-lived, as once the dry season returns, the vividly blue lakes vanish without a trace.

The best time for visitors to witness the natural spectacle is between July and September when the mirage-like ponds have formed.

The park's website recommends around two days are needed to explore the biggest lagoons in the park, Azul, and Bonita and advise only guided tours are undertaken in the area.

Access is easiest from the town of Barreirinhas near Maranhão, with Jeeps being the best form of transport to handle the hilly terrain.
