#Newsflash: Najib posts first instalment of RM3.5mil bail

KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has posted RM1mil out of the RM3.5mil bail that a Sessions Court imposed on him in his latest court case.

The former prime minister arrived at the Jalan Duta court complex at 10.55am yesterday and left five minutes later.

He was seen entering the Sessions Court bail counter via the basement.

“I already paid my bail (RM1mil) as ordered by the court yesterday (Thursday),” he said in his brief remarks to pressmen before leaving.

Judge Azura Alwi fixed bail at RM3.5mil in two sureties for all 25 charges.

Najib’s son, Mohammed Nizar, and another man, Mohd Shahrir Arifin, were named as bailors.

The relationship between Mohd Shahrir and Najib is not known.

Najib’s lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah requested that the bail be posted in staggered payments.

The court allowed Najib to post RM1mil yesterday and RM500,000 each day next week until the amount is met.

Najib was hit with the 25 charges of graft and money laundering linked to 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB).

The 64-year-old pleaded not guilty to four charges of graft which allegedly occurred at the AmIslamic Bank Bhd branch in Jalan Raja Chulan while in his position as a civil servant, namely as prime minister, finance minister and chairman of the advisory board for 1MDB.

He is alleged to have, on four occasions between Feb 24, 2011 and Dec 19, 2014, received RM60,626,839.43, RM90,899,927.28, RM2,081,476,926 and RM49,930,985.70 in bribes.

The first charge said the bribe was an inducement for Najib to get the Cabinet’s agreement for the Malaysian government to give a sovereign guarantee to the Terengganu Investment Authority Bhd, thus allowing the company to receive a loan of up to RM5bil from the domestic and international markets via an Islamic Medium Term Notes Programme.

Najib also claimed trial to 21 charges under the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act.
