#Newsflash: How could a brand new plane crash?

Lion Air flight JT 610 has crashed into the sea, with nearly 190 people on board, shortly after taking off from the Indonesian capital, Jakarta.

A lot of attention has focused on the fact the plane, a Boeing 737 MAX 8, was brand new. This is the first major incident involving that kind of plane.

Details so far have been scant and the cause will not be confirmed until a full investigation has been carried out.

Plane crashes are often the result of a combination of factors - both technical and human - but could the fact that the plane was so new have played any part?

The Boeing 737 MAX 8 has only been in commercial use since 2017.

Budget carrier Lion Air said in July it was "very proud" to be the first in Indonesia to deploy the plane, and that it had ordered as many as 218 units.

The plane involved in Monday's incident has only been in operation since 15 August.

It had logged only 800 hours of flight time, according to the head of the National Transportation Safety Commission, Soerjanto Tjahjano.

The pilot is reported to have radioed air traffic control in Jakarta asking for permission to turn back, shortly after taking off.

Lion Air's chief executive said the flight had suffered from an unspecified "technical problem" in a previous flight, but that it had been "resolved according to procedure", Reuters reports.

Edward Sirait said Lion Air was currently operating 11 aircraft of the same model. He said there were no plans to ground the rest of the planes.

'Snags' sorted quickly
Aviation analyst Gerry Soejatman told the BBC that "very old aircraft are usually at the highest risk [of accidents], but very young aircraft also carry a high risk".

"If it's very new there are sometimes snags that only reveal themselves after they are [used routinely]. These usually get sorted [within] the first three months."

The plane would have hit the three month mark in just a few weeks.

However, another aviation analyst, Jon Ostrower, said new planes generally "enjoy a maintenance holiday because everything is so new, not the reverse".

Mr Ostrower, editor of aviation publication The Air Current, said there were "always new teething issues... that's common, but a far cry from something that would threaten the safety of an airplane".

Both analysts said it's too early to draw definitive conclusions about what went wrong with Flight JT 610.

"It's likely to be technical issues that caused it but it's still very early days. We can really [only determine the cause] when we get more information," said Mr Soejatman.

Mr Ostrower echoed this.

"I don't know what would make a plane this new crash. There are so many different factors that can contribute to an accident like this," he told the BBC.

According to Boeing, the 737 MAX series is the fastest-selling airplane in its history, and has accumulated almost 4,700 orders.

The MAX 8 has been ordered by airlines including American Airlines, United Airlines, Norwegian and FlyDubai.

#Newsflash: Indonesia says Lion Air passenger flight crashes off Sumatra

A Lion Air flight with 188 aboard crashed into the sea off Indonesia's island of Java on Monday, shortly after take off from the capital Jakarta, Indonesia's search and rescue agency said.

Indonesia's search and rescue agency said on Monday a Lion Air passenger flight from Jakarta, the capital, to the city of Pangkal Pinang off the island of Sumatra, had crashed into the sea.

"It has been confirmed that it has crashed," Yusuf Latif, a spokesman for the agency, said by text message, when asked about the fate of the Lion Air plane. It was not immediately clear how many were on board.

The plane lost contact 13 minutes after takeoff, the official said, adding that a tug boat leaving the capital's port had seen the craft falling. The jet was a Boeing 737 MAX 8, according to air tracking service Flightradar 24.

Flight JT610 took off around 6.20 a.m. and was due to have landed in the capital of the Bangka-Belitung tin mining hub at 7.20 a.m., the tracking service showed.

"We cannot give any comment at this moment," said Edward Sirait, chief executive of Lion Air Group. "We are trying to collect all the information and data."

A news conference would be held later on Monday, he told Reuters.

The accident is the first to be reported that involves the widely-sold Boeing 737 MAX, an updated, more fuel-efficient version of the manufacturer's workhorse single-aisle jet. The first Boeing 737 MAX jets were introduced into service in 2017.

Lion Air's Malaysian subsidiary, Malindo Air, received the very first global delivery.

#Newsflash: Watch: Passenger smacks airport worker with iPhone over cancelled flight

KUALA LUMPUR: Angry that your flight has been cancelled, and itching to lash out? There’s no app for that (yet), but the iPhone proved its amazing versatility in dealing with just such a situation, as a recent incident in China demonstrated.

The event occurred at an airport in Qingdao, Shandong, where the iPhone user, surnamed ‘Wu’, was informed that his flight had been cancelled due to bad weather. To compensate him and his family for the inconvenience, the airline provided overnight hotel accommodation, 400 yuan and seats on a flight taking off the following day.

But the next morning, Wu turned up at the airport and angrily demanded seats on an early flight, instead of the one which he had been booked on.

Furious when told that no seats were available, Wu – who was speaking on his iPhone 6 Plus – interrupted his tele-conversation to reach out and smack an airport employee across the face with the sizable phablet.

The assaulted staff member kept his cool, however, and directed Wu to another employee, while placing a hand on his (probably) throbbing cheek.

The weaponised-iPhone event was witnessed by Wu’s young son, who was barely tall enough to peer over the counter – and, luckily for us, a CCTV camera.

Wu was later apprehended by airport security staff, and following 10 days behind bars, was placed on China’s travel blacklist, the Shanghaiist reported.

According to the Daily Mail, the incident occurred on July 29, but footage of the iAssault was only released this week and went viral on social media.

#Newsflash: Palu facing dire straits as rains threaten to spread malaria

JAKARTA: Indonesia’s quake-tsunami battered city of Palu is facing a public health crisis as torrential rains threaten to spread malaria and dengue fever to the devastated region a month after the disaster, aid agencies have warned.

On Sept 28, a magnitude 7.5 quake and a subsequent tsunami razed swathes of Palu on Sulawesi island, killing some 2,200 people and displacing more than 220,000.

Thousands more are missing, presumed dead, after entire neighbourhoods were swallowed up by liquefaction – a process where a strong quake makes the ground start behaving like a liquid, turning it into a kind of quicksand.

Desperate to stave off disease, authorities last week dropped disinfectant from helicopters on the worst-hit parts of Palu, where some 5,000 rotting corpses are feared buried beneath the ruins.

Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency said the move was crucial to preventing the proliferation of disease-laden flies, cockroaches and rats.

But aid groups say there has been an increase in cases of diarrhoea and respiratory infection, while there are also suspected cases of mosquito-borne illnesses, including malaria and dengue fever.

Heavy monsoon rains predicted for the months ahead threaten to make a bad situation worse.

“It is likely we’re going to see more and more people getting sick ... given how hard it is to maintain hygiene standards, with the rains providing the perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes, and with hundreds, if not thousands of bodies, believed to be decomposing in the ground,” said Selina Sumbung, chairperson of Save the Children’s partner in Indonesia, Yayasan Sayangi Tunas Cilik. — AFP

#Newsflash: Save M'sian on death row in Singapore, urges Lawyers for Liberty

PETALING JAYA: Lawyer N. Surendran has urged the government to help save Malaysian citizen Prabu Pathmanathan, who is on death row in Singapore, whilst also calling on the Singapore government to halt the execution.

The Lawyers for Liberty advisor said as Malaysia recognised the "barbarity of the death penalty" and had announced the total abolition of it, he called on the government to do everything possible to save its citizens abroad who are facing execution.

"We now urge the Malaysian government to make urgent and strenuous efforts to save Prabu Pathmanathan from the gallows this Friday.

"The continued use of the death penalty for drug offences is a violation of the ICCPR (International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights), of which Singapore is a state party," he said in a statement on Wednesday (Oct 24).

Surendran urged the Singapore government to halt the execution and commute his mandatory death sentence.

Surendran said Prabu's family had been informed that the execution would be held at Changi Prison on Friday (Oct 26) for alleged drug trafficking.

"The family were only informed of the Friday hanging on Oct 20 via a letter from the Singapore Prison Services, which is less than one week's notice.

"In the same chilling letter, the family was asked to make the 'necessary funeral arrangements'," he said.

According to Surendran, there were doubts surrounding Prabu's conviction, adding that the drugs found in the vehicle was driven by another person, and not Prabu.

He added that the confessions obtained against Prabu by the prosecution for the trial was made under duress.

On Oct 15, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Liew Vui Keong said the Malaysian government would go ahead with plans to completely abolish the death penalty.

#Newsflash: California plane crash: Light aircraft smashes into Los Angeles county highway

A pilot has walked away unscathed after a light aircraft crashed into a highway in California.

The plane smashed into westbound side of the 101 freeway in Agoura Hills on Tuesday, before ending up against the central divider.

Despite the crumpled aircraft bursting into flames, Los Angeles County fire department said the pilot, who appeared to be the only person onboard, was uninjured.

The pilot, identified only as Rob, spoke to local news channel ABC7 close to the scene of the crash.

"I picked a spot on the freeway, where I knew there was a big section of cars that weren't there, but the engine completely failed," he said. "Fortunately, I was able to not hurt anybody - other than the airplane."

The crash occurred around 1.45pm, with officials confirming no other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Both directions of the freeway were closed, with California highway patrol announcing all lanes would be closed for an "unknown duration".

#Newsflash: US revoking visas, exploring sanctions in Khashoggi death

WASHINGTON: The United States has identified some Saudi officials responsible for the killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi and is taking action, including revoking visas and exploring sanctions, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Tuesday (Oct 23).

"These penalties will not be the last word on the matter from the United States," Pompeo told reporters. "We're making very clear that the United States does not tolerate this kind of ruthless action to silence Mr Khashoggi, a journalist, through violence."

The top US diplomat said the Saudi suspects came from "the intelligence services, the royal court, the foreign ministry and other Saudi ministries."

Pompeo added the United States was also looking into whether to take action under a law named after Sergei Magnitsky, the anti-corruption accountant who died in Russian custody, that would impose financial sanctions on individuals behind Khashoggi's death.

The initial US action against the Saudis came three weeks after Khashoggi, self-exiled to suburban Washington, vanished in the consulate and following contradictory statements by Trump, who has ruled out major steps such as cutting arms sales to the major defense partner.

#Newsflash: ‘Wrong soil used in Bukit Kukus project’

Courting danger: Dr Habibah showing the sandy soil from the landslide in Jalan Bukit Kukus, Paya Terubong.
GEORGE TOWN: We will be courting danger if construction firms continue to use sandy soil as filler soil like the Bukit Kukus Paired Road project, says Universiti Sains Malaysia Landslide Disaster Management and Soil Erosion expert Prof Dr Habibah Lateh.

“Sandy soil is not strong, it is loose and not compact.

“If they had used stronger soil, one that has higher pile value, it would be able to stay.

“Who monitored the site to see if the right soil was being used?” she asked at the landslide area in Paya Terubong yesterday.

“The cabin containers were also located on a slope and at the bottom.

“There is a stream on top of the hill which will loosen the earth, making it easier for a landslide to take place.

“As an academician, I do not know if the standard operating procedures (SOPs) were followed,” she said.

Dr Habibah said the state has good rules and regulations but claimed that the implementation and monitoring were not carried out.

“If an engineer had monitored it, they would have known if the sand was correct,” she said.

Dr Habibah said she was only doing this in her capacity as a researcher and was not approached by the state or the Penang Island City Council.

Meanwhile, the main contractor of the project, Yuta Maju Sdn Bhd, said that it had worked with third parties to ensure the recovered bodies were properly sent back to their respective countries.

“The respective consulates are well aware of the efforts being taken for proper repatriation of the bodies.

“The bodies found, including those rescued, are not our employees.

“The cabins were former living quarters of the workers employed for the project and were abandoned several weeks prior.

“Electricity supply had been disconnected as of Oct 2 to ensure that the cabins were not used by anyone,” the company said in a statement.

#Newsflash: Taiwan train driver switched off speed control before deadly accident: Court

YILAN, Taiwan: The driver of a train in Taiwan that crashed killing 18 people told a court on Tuesday (Oct 23) he had switched off its speed-control system, a court official said, as investigators pieced together events that led to the island's worst rail crash in decades.

The train came off the rails on Sunday on a curve while moving at almost 140 kmh, nearly twice the speed limit of 74 kmh, in the island's mountainous northeast, the head of a government investigation team said.

Chief investigator Wu Ze-cheng told Reuters earlier it was not clear whether the speed-control system, called automatic train protection, had switched off by itself or had been manually disabled before the accident, which also injured 187 people.

A spokesman for Taiwan Yilan District Court told Reuters the driver told his bail hearing he switched off the system himself to boost the train's power when it had slowed down on an earlier stretch of the journey.

"He should have turned the system back on at the next stop," said the court spokesman, Huang Yong-sheng.

"The defendant is highly suspected to have been negligent."

#Newsflash: New charges for Najib? Reports he will face at least four more this week

Local media is reporting that inside sources have revealed that former prime minister Najib Razak will face fresh charges this week to add to a growing list of corruption woes stemming from accusations of fund misappropriation from the 1MDB sovereign wealth fund.

New Straits Times is reporting that the prosecution is looking to hold Najib liable in last year’s debt settlement between 1MDB and International Petroleum Investment Co (IPIC), the Abu Dhabi wealth fund.

According to sources from within the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), prior to the new government taking power, Najib and his administration authorized using taxpayer money to settle the debt. Allegedly, this was done without approval of even the cabinet.

The payment came as a result of a failure for 1MDB to settle a bond remittance to IPIC due back in 2016. Najib later reached a settlement in 2017, using the Finance Ministry where he was also the minister, to repay US$1.2 billion to the Abu Dhabi fund over a US$6.5 billion claim they made.

As chairman of 1MDB’s board of advisers up to May 2016, when it was dissolved and its responsibilities transferred to the Finance Ministry, much of wealth fund’s actions fall on Najib’s shoulders.

New Straits Times reports exclusively that these charges will be related to criminal breach of trust.

Najib has been summoned to MACC headquarters in Putrajaya twice over the 1MDB and IPIC dealings: He was quizzed for six hours on October 16, and again, two days later.

It is understood that it is now up to the Attorney-General’s Chambers to file charges against Najib.

If the accusations do indeed prove to be true, the former prime ministers charges will creep from the current 32 to nearly 40.

#Newsflash: 17 dead after train flips in Taiwan

At least 17 people have died after an express train derailed and flipped over on a popular coastal route in Taiwan on Sunday.

The Taiwan Railways Administration confirmed 17 people had been killed and said 132 people had also been injured in the accident in northeastern Yilan county.

Authorities have not confirmed if any passengers remain trapped alive inside the train. An AFP reporter at the scene said that more bodies were being brought out of the wrecked carriages.

Images from the site showed the Puyuma Express train completely derailed and lying zig-zagged across the track.

All of the train's eight carriages had derailed and five had flipped onto their side at Xinma station, the railways administration said.

One passenger told Apple Daily Taiwan that the train had been shaking during the journey.

Taiwan authorities said the accident had happened at 4:50 pm local time (0850 GMT) with no cause yet given.

The railways administration said there had been 366 people on board the service en route to the southern city of Taitung.

The defence ministry said it had sent in 120 soldiers to help the rescue.

President Tsai Ing-wen described the accident as a "major tragedy" in a Tweet Sunday evening.

"My thoughts are with all the victims and their families," she added.

#HealthInfo: Eye Health: Changes in Vision as You Age

Eyestrain and Computer Use
Vision problems may result when you stare at computer screens, smartphones, tablets, and e-readers for too long. Excessive screen time may result in headaches, dry eyes, eyestrain, blurred vision, and shoulder and neck pain. These symptoms are temporary and resolve when you limit or take a break from screen time. To minimize computer eyestrain, position the monitor so that is approximately 2 feet in front of you. Make sure you have adequate lighting to reduce glare. Experts recommend following the 20-20-20 rule to minimize the risk of eyestrain and other symptoms associated with looking at screens. The rule is to look at an object that is 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds for every 20 minutes that you are on the computer or looking at another device screen.

Protect Your Eyes
Eyes are vulnerable to damage from ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, chemicals, and accidents. Protect your peepers by wearing sunglasses that have UV protection while outdoors. Wear protective goggles when you are working with machinery, tools, or caustic chemicals. Approximately 2,000 people every day in the U.S. suffer eye injuries while on the job that require medical treatment. An injury to the eye or chemical exposure could even lead to blindness. It is estimated that 90% of these eye injuries could be prevented or minimized if people wore adequate eye protection. Wear protective eye goggles or even a face shield when working with tools or chemicals at home or on the job. Wear sunglasses while outside to protect yourself against UV sun exposure.
Is It Time for 'Readers'?
Most people need to use reading glasses to see things up close once they reach a certain age, usually by age 40 or older. The inability to see things clearly up close is called presbyopia. Eyeglasses called "readers" improve your ability to see things that are close up more clearly. You can purchase readers over the counter at pharmacies and other venues. They are available in various strengths, but unlike prescription eyeglasses, they will not be tailored to your vision. Usually people need different prescriptions for each eye, so standard readers may not be appropriate for you. You can also correct your vision by wearing contact lenses or getting laser surgery.

The rates of both myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness) increase with age. About 25 percent of adults between the ages of 40 and over are nearsighted and about 10 percent of adults over the age of 40 are farsighted. Nearsightedness and farsightedness are common eye problems. You can correct your vision by wearing prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses. See your optometrist to test your vision and discuss whether eyeglasses, contact lenses, or a combination of the two are right for you.

What Is Presbyopia?
Presbyopia is a normal process associated with aging of the eyes. The lens of the eye is very flexible before the age of 40. This flexibility makes it easy for the eyes to focus on objects that are far away or close up. The lens becomes less flexible as we age. This makes it more difficult to focus on objects that are close up. Inadequate or poor lighting makes the problem worse. People with the condition often hold books or menus at a restaurant farther away to be able to read from them more easily.

Other Diseases and Vision
Some diseases that you would not necessarily associate with the eyes can negatively impact vision. Diabetes and high blood pressure can lead to eye conditions and visual impairment. Diabetes is a top potential cause of blindness in adults. Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that leads to damage to blood vessels that are located in the retina. Symptoms of diabetic retinopathy may include blurriness, trouble perceiving colors, dark areas of vision, and floaters. Diabetes may cause retinal artery occlusion. This condition causes a blockage in a small artery that delivers blood to the retina. High blood pressure can potentially cause permanent loss of vision by damaging nerves and blood vessels in the eyes.

If you experience any problems including eye pain, floaters, lazy eye (amblyopia), uveitis, astigmatism, conjunctivitis (pink eye), red eyes, nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), retinal detachment, blepharitis, corneal disease, strabismus, pinguecula, retinal disorders, keratoconus, retinitis pigmentosa, sudden loss of vision or blindness, vision problems, chalazion, or droopy eyelids, see your eye doctor right away. Everyone should have regular eye exams to screen for eye diseases and eye problems, but it's especially important to see the ophthalmologist when you are experiencing eye symptoms. Conjunctivitis caused by viruses or bacteria is highly contagious! Wash your hands frequently and do not touch your eyes to avoid spreading it to others.

An eye doctor can examine the corneal tissue, retinal tissue, macular tissue, eyelids, conjunctiva, subconjunctival tissue, and other tissues of the eyes during an eye exam.

#Newsflash: Eyebrows raised over photo

KOTA KINABALU: A picture of a meeting between PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and six senior Sabah opposition leaders is stirring the social media with speculations of new alignments and allegiance in the state.

Anwar is seen in a group photo with former foreign minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman (Kimanis); Parti Solidariti Tahnah AirKu president Datuk Dr Jeffery Kitingan (Keningau) and Parti Bersatu Sabah acting president Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili (Kota Marudu).

Others are Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) deputy president Arthur Kurup (Pensiangan) and a Sabah Umno leader Datuk Zakariah Edris (Libaran).

The picture was apparently taken after the Sabah independent MPs met with Anwar at his office in Petaling Jaya on Thursday.

There is little detail coming out about the meeting with Anwar but this is raising eyebrows among Sabah’s political circles amid talks of reshaping Sabah’s political alliance with the ruling federal government in the aftermath of the May 9 election.

When asked about the meeting Dr Jeffrey said that it was a courtesy call.

“We just paid a courtesy call and to congratulate him on his Port Dickson by-election victory...that’s all. We represent the independent parliamentarians,” said Dr Jeffrey.

Asked if they spoke to Anwar about the plans to set up Gabungan Bersatu Sabah that would include PBS, Sabah STAR and Umno elected representatives, Dr Jeffrey said there were no such discussions.

“Well, we briefed Anwar, on our concerns in Sabah, especially on security and Imm13 issue (immigration passes given to Filipino refugees who fled to Sabah in the early 1970s). Hopefully, he listened,” added Dr Jeffrey.

Dr Jeffrey insisted that there was nothing political but mainly state issues discussed while other leaders including Anifah and Dr Maximus could not be reached for comments on the meeting.

Anifah, who last month left Umno to become independent MP and has said he would support the Pakatan government on state rights, is widely seen as looking at forming a new party that will work with the proposed Sabah based coalition GBS.

Remnant Sabah Umno elected representatives, who have also declared that Sabah Barisan remains only on paper, are also working towards a coalition under GBS.

If the new opposition coalition materialises it will be the main opposition to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Datuk Mohd Shafie Apdal’s Parti Warisan Sabah and its coalition partners DAP, PKR and UPKO.

Political sources in both camps maintain that the situation is still fluid as negotiations were on-going with some of the remaining elected representatives not keen with GBS looking at Warisan, PKR and other parties as their choice.

#Newsflash: Dreamliner engine shuts down mid-flight

Australian transport authorities are investigating yet another issue with an engine on a Dreamliner aircraft.

A Scoot airlines flight was flying between Singapore and Perth when its right engine shut down unexpectedly.

The incident, which happened on Thursday last week, is the latest in a long series of issues with the Rolls-Royce engines being used on Dreamliners around the world.

The Australian Transport Safety Bureau has begun an investigation which will include interviewing crew and analysing engineering reports.

Scoot is a low cost airline owned by a subsidiary company of Singapore Airlines.

It has a total of 48 Boeing Dreamliners in its fleet.

The report is expected to be completed early next year.

#Newsflash: It's 'crazy' that current account deficits today are considered 'a sin:' Singapore deputy PM

  • Many developing countries were able to succeed by running current account deficits during their early years of growth, Singaporean Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam told CNBC on Friday.
  • “Today, it's a sin to run a current account deficit and that's crazy,” said Shanmugaratnam, who is also the chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore.
  • The minister said there was a need to make it possible again for countries to run sustainable current account deficits, and to have them funded reliably.

For decades, developing countries have relied on outside investments to boost their growth, but that strategy has come to be regarded as "a sin," according to Singapore deputy prime minister.

Such a development is just "crazy," Tharman Shanmugaratnam told CNBC on Friday during the annual meeting of the Institute of International Finance on the Indonesian island of Bali.

Shanmugaratnam was referring to the widely held outlook that nations should seek to avoid current account deficits — which indicate they're operating on borrowed means because the value of incoming goods, services and investments exceeds the amount leaving the country.

"How did the Singapores and Koreas of the world grow?" he said. "We grew by running current account deficits at an early stage of development so we could invest ahead for growth while our savings were being built up."

Singapore was able to rely on financing through foreign direct investments and long-term investors during its early years of growth, as the international financial system at that time had capital flowing to developing economies, Shanmugaratnam said.

"Today, it's a sin to run a current account deficit and that's crazy," said the minister, who is also the chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, the country's central bank and financial regulator. "I mean, it's bad in economics, it's bad in policy sense, and the whole world is going to suffer."

"We've got to make it possible once again for countries to run sustainable current account deficits, to have them funded reliably, and for investments to flow into the most productive areas," Shanmugaratnam said.

The China factor
Beijing has enjoyed close economic ties with the Southeast Asian nation for decades. China is Singapore's largest trading partner, and the city-state is China's largest foreign investor.

Asked what impact China's economic slowdown will have on Singapore, Shanmugaratnam replied: "I think first, we have to accept that the China growth slowdown is a secular story. It's a long-term story and it's not actually occasioned by what's happening in the short term."

China's labor force growth will inevitably slow down, and Beijing will increasingly need to move up the value chain and improve productivity, he said. However, "the trade frictions complicate policy making greatly," said the deputy prime minister.

"China is having to ease up on credit policy, which isn't necessarily helpful for medium to long-term stability, but that's what they have to do when faced with very unexpected trade frictions," he said.

Earlier this month, Beijing said its central bank would cut the amount of reserves that banks are required to hold, resulting in a cash injection of some 750 billion yuan ($109.2 billion) into the banking system. That decision was one of several measures by the government to make it easier for borrowers to access credit and stimulate economic activity.
