There are numerous survival stories of those who have battled death and live to tell their astonishing tales. But, nothing can beat this case of miraculous survival of a 53-year-old French man who was resuscitated 18 hours after his heart had stopped working. Even more stunning is the fact that, the man who has not been named, is now recovering in hospital without any damage to his brain.
The man survived because he suffered hypothermia which caused his body temperature to fall protecting his vital organs, The Times reports.
Jonathan Charbit, in charge of intensive care unit at Montpellier University Hospital, told the man's survival was because the fall in his body temperature had protected his brain and other organs.
Charbit said, "The probability of him surviving was near to zero. This is a textbook case. It's also an extraordinary medical and human adventure."
The French man suffered a heart attack while he was walking back home from his brother's house in Béziers, Montpellier on March 12. When the man did not return home, relatives went to look out for him and found him lying unconscious by a river.
The paramedics who arrived at the scene, discovered he was suffering with hypothermia with a body temperature of 22C, instead of the normal 37C. They started to resuscitate him at the scene before he was rushed to the hospital and doctors took over.
For over four hours, medics carried on with heart massages before placing him on a heart-lung machine which kept him alive. When his body temperature rose, doctors made an attempt to get his heart going.
However, the patient suffered several broken ribs due to the heart massages and stayed on the heart-lung machine for three days.
